Houston Recalled Six Miniatures by George Fuermann
Archive
Houston Recalled Six Miniatures by George Fuermann (1918-2001), published in 1968 by the Houston Natural Gas Corporation, consists of six miniature volumes focusing on different aspects of Houston. The titles are: Houston Deplored, Early Architecture in Houston, Early Christmas Menus in Houston, Early Motoring in Houston, O. Henry in Houston, and Early Aviation in Houston. A publisher's note highlights Fuermann's contributions as a literate newspaper columnist, gourmet, arts patron, and emerging historian, with each vignette reflecting the serene spirit of earlier Houston. Limited to an edition of 1000 copies. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Fuermann moved to Texas in 1923. After graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in journalism in 1941, he served as a U.S. Army correspondent during WWII, earning a Bronze Star. His 49-year career at the Houston Post began in 1946, where he wrote various columns, including "Post Card" and "Wine Talk," until 1995. After the Post closed, he continued writing a wine column for Rice Epicurean Markets from 1996 to 1999.
